What is Christian Counseling?
Counseling that is distinctively Christian must start with the mind of Christ. In Luke 4:18, Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah saying he has come to “preach good news to the poor, to proclaim freedom to prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.” Our mission is to join Christ in this work by bringing the truths of God's word to bear on current and past situations offering good news, insight, and freedom. While we may often expose our own spiritual beliefs in counseling sessions, we will never under any circumstances impose our beliefs upon you.
Christian counseling is a dynamic process in which the counselor, client, and Holy Spirit work together toward a common goal. The process is predicated upon trust in one another. It is essential that the counselor and client act as a team to investigate and define present problem situations, develop future goals for an improved life, and work in a methodical fashion toward realizing those goals. Counseling is designed to equip clients with the tools and skills they need to stay healthy and to prepare them for future obstacles they may encounter.
What To Expect When You Arrive
Upon arrival, our professional and courteous office staff will help you with any necessary paperwork. You'll be able to relax in our "den" while you wait for your counselor. He or she will greet you and escort you to one of our comfortable counseling rooms where you'll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have before the session begins. The first session typically involves you sharing with your counselor why you are there, and beginning to put together a plan for progress. Expect each session to last 45-50 minutes.
How Do I Know I Need Counseling?
Contrary to popular misconceptions, you don’t have to be “crazy,” desperate or on the brink of a meltdown to seek counseling. In fact, most people can benefit from counseling at least some point in their lives. Here are a few indicators that counseling might be a good next step:
- Feeling sad, depressed or otherwise “not yourself”
- Feeling anxious, worrying most of the day, or having difficulty sleeping?
- Concerned about an issue in your marriage, other relationship or with a child for more than 6 weeks
- Abusing drugs, alcohol, food or sex to cope
- The loss of someone or something important to you
- A traumatic event or a crisis has happened to you or in your family
- You would like to talk through an issue in a safe environment and find wisdom
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Some people find help in as little as one or two sessions, but as a general rule, most people find relief and direction in 7-10 sessions. You and your counselor will periodically review your progress and what you still want to accomplish to determine how many more sessions you will need.
